9. Can you tell me more about Battambang?
Battambang is the second-largest city in Cambodia with a population of over 250,000. Founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire, Battambang is well known for being the leading rice-producing province of the country. For over 500 years, it was the main commercial hub of Siam’s Eastern Provinces, though it was always populated by Khmer with a mix of ethnic Vietnamese, Lao, Thai and Chinese. Still today Battambang is the main hub of the Northwest connecting the entire region with Phnom Penh and Thailand, and as such it’s a vital link to Cambodia.
The city is situated by the Sangker River, a tranquil, small body of water that winds its way through Battambang Province providing its nice picturesque setting. As with much of Cambodia, the French Colonial architecture is an attractive bonus of the city. It is home to some of the best-preserved, French colonial architecture in the country.
10. What will the accomodation be like?
We will be staying in a hotel for the duration of our trip. The quality of the hotels in Battambang are quite high, so the hotel will include hot showers, air conditioning, breakfast, and also WiFi in some instances. Team members will likely be sharing a twin room (two single beds).
11. Will I need shots?
Yes. Make sure your MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), DPT (diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus), and Polio shots are up to date (these are common vaccines). In addition, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid shots are highly recommended. Antimalarial drugs and a “Gastro Kit” (for diarrhoea) are also highly recommended. Japanese encephalitis and Rabies are optional. We have a doctor at Newlife what will be providing discounted vaccinations, so don’t see the travel doctor yet, we will organise shots for you.
12. What do I need to bring?
We will upload a “Packing List” page for detailed information about what to bring to Cambodia in the weeks prior to the trip.
